Amidst COVID-19, Ogun Doctors Commence Warning Strike Leave a comment

ABEOKUTA – Despite the ravaging global pandemic, COVID-19, resident doctors of Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital (OOUTH), Sagamu, Ogun State, commence a three-day warning strike today.

It would be recalled that the hospital houses one of the isolation centres designated by the government for the management and treatment of the coronavirus, and the centre at present houses about 18 patients.

The doctors, under the aegis of Association of Resident Doctors of OOUTH, said the decision followed the failure of Governor Dapo Abiodun’s administration to address issues relating to the welfare of the doctors.

The doctors have, however, resolved to exclude members working at the isolation centre from joining the strike action.

According to a letter dated April 29 and addressed to Governor Dapo Abiodun, a copy of which was obtained by Daily Independent, the association said its decision was further hinged on the refusal of the government to respond to earlier letters written by the association.

The President of the Association, Popoola Muti Abiodun, who spoke with Daily Independent, revealed that several letters, including that of its national body which was written about three months ago, were not responded to by the government.

Popoola further revealed that two other letters of notification giving the government 21 and seven days ultimatums were ignored by the government.

The association, in the letter, said the response of the government to the warning strike would be reviewed to know the next line of action.

Part of the statement reads: “The whole house is very much unpleased with the government on issues that border on our agitations and welfare.

“Sequel to the persistent noncommittal response to our previous multiple letters, including 21 days ultimatum with another 7 days ultimatum, notifying you about the need for Appropriate Remuneration for Doctors in OOUTH, we hereby write to inform you that from 8a.m on Monday 4th of May, 2020, we shall embark on a 3-day warning strike.

“We have been on this struggle for appropriate remuneration for over 4 years and it is unfortunate that government’s unwilling attitude to the welfare of doctors in OOUTH is unbecoming.

“We have a human face and we know people are the basis of our practice as medical professionals. We shall therefore exclude our members working at COVID -19 Isolation Centre from joining the strike action. They shall not take part in the strike.
